During our ALP session, an individualized practice class intended to give extra help to English 100 students, with our professor, we explored different ways to potentially start the introduction of our research project. One of the alternative ways to start it was to open with a scene! We took one moment from our week of three good things and focused on how can we relate it to positive psychology and how we can develop a descriptive scene from it to use as a real example for our research like we had done before. I do think this is a really creative approach and a great attention grabber for the project, but I personally chose another approach, so instead I'll be posting my alternate scene introduction here on my blog. Enjoy my negatively positive scene from the October 31st entry of my three good things post. The back tire of my truck spun and spun until smoke from the burning rubber escaped from under the now seared, thick plank of wood. This was the third piece of material my boyfriend Dk and I used to lodge under my tire to break it free from the slippery, small muddied ditch it was stuck in. As well as, many aggressive pushes on my poor gas pedal. We tried plain old broken branches and flat stones beforehand and none were budging to give my truck the one tiny push it needed for my tire to catch it’s traction back onto dry ground. Dk and I were frustrated, dirty and losing hope fast.
We rummaged through more of the plants in the area surrounding the dirt road we pulled down across from the creek we were visiting for fun. It’s almost as though God had placed our solution right in front of Dk just when we were about to give up and seek help. In the weeds, he conveniently found a huge, discarded slab of cement and dug out some more dirt and slid it under. We surveyed around my truck one last time, pulled out any potential stones or sticks from other tires that could also have been preventing it from catching the wedged material. Thankfully with one last hefty push on the gas pedal, my truck hurled itself over the slab and finally moved from out of the ditch and was able to reverse, then accelerate again. Dk and I wasted no time after my truck was settled in a secure spot to then continue what we had come to our spot for originally. When looking back at it, I find it easier to look at this situation with only fond memories now instead of frustration. We found a solution, didn’t have to pay an authority to help us, and we had a beautiful picnic in the bed of my truck with our favorite Wawa snacks and not to mention on the most beautiful day. Perfect 65 degrees fahrenheit, sun shining through the cracks of the trees and glistening off the creek water but just enough shade to keep it cool. I couldn’t ask for a better day or better company. Psychologists really do mean it when they say perspective is everything, because it could’ve been the worst day to anyone else.

I really like how you focused on the positive aspect of the situation rather than the negative because we usually focus on the negative. I like the scene, it really makes the research project more interesting in seeing how one's perspective on life can change.

This type of opening anecdote could serve as a both a strong hook to grab reader interest and a bridge into your argument about gratitude.
