During week seven, I will be creating a found poem using words and/or excerpts from the 1st draft of my narrative project. The poem creates a creative summary of the topic of my narrative. It tells the story but through phases rather than full sentences. This post will be broken up into two sections, the poem itself and a reflection. I admire this assignment because it’s helped me pick possible themes for my story in the process of finding the phrases. Still not quite sure what a found poem is? Read a sample. The genre of my poem will be freeform excerpting and remixing. “Parting of Mother and Daughter” Mom isn’t home, and neither am I. Shaking leaves from the mild breeze, Summer days, sweat on my sleeves. Cut the rope, break the tie. Shattered brain, brickhouse throat. Say goodbye and steal a hug, Push the lie under the rug. Don’t forget your favorite coat. Tears, they stream down my face. My ride is waiting outside, They’ll know I cried. Time to leave this sunken place. What starts with a lie, ends a chapter. She’ll always love you in her heart, Remember all the homemade art? For now, you’ll just have to be without her. Reflection Q: Do you think the narrative provides enough descriptive language to create a compelling found poem? If not, how do you plan to revise the descriptive language in the narrative? A: I think what I’ve composed so far in my first draft did have a decent amount of descriptive language and even sensory detail to add to the poem without drawing it out too much. Considering it only took me under about 12 minutes to look over the narrative and write the poem, I think it’s safe to say I provided enough. There’s always room to add more though! Q: Do you think the descriptive language more so creates a setting or delivers the subtext of a theme? In revision, will you focus on using description to develop more of the setting or more of a theme? A: I think the descriptive language I wrote is easily open for interpretation and can easily have deeper meaning applied to it from details from the story. Going further, I will definitely focus on using more description and existing description to develop more themes and delve deeper into the ones I have in mind.
